Gimme Anything That’s Cheap (poems from old notebooks, c. 2001)

Haven’t tracked down exactly when I wrote this; it’s from 2000 or 2001 when I was messing around with writing song-like things. I remember chortling as I wrote it in my room on the third floor of Bleak House, which is what I called the place on Prince St. where I was renting a room from a friend. A local musician, Pat Deighan, later based one of his songs on the last verse. (The man mentioned in that verse died a few years later.)

Gimme Anything That’s Cheap

Got white bread and mercy killings
Here’s Jesus rolling dice
Saying, “Nobody likes me now
Cause I’m too damn nice”
And he don’t like this city
It ain’t got no Wailing Wall
Says he’d rather be out fishing
With his good friend Paul

Gimme vodka and a needle
Gimme cash and bad advice
But keep your goddamn prayers
They ain’t cheap at half the price

Old Galileo had some balls
He knew things had to stop
Pushed his weights around a bit
Then he let the matter drop
And Newton never wanted nothing
Except the music of the spheres
But instead of a symphony
He heard grinding gears

Gimme vodka and a needle
Gimme cash and bad advice
But keep your goddamn prayers
They ain’t cheap at half the price

And Charlie, he’s been on the street
Since 1974
Used to be a lightweight boxer
But he don’t fight no more
Sleeps down by the railroad wharf
And you know he’s still around
Cause there’s an empty Lysol can
That ain’t rusting on the ground.

Gimme vodka and a needle
Gimme cash and bad advice
But keep your goddamn prayers
They ain’t cheap at half the price

Gimme vodka and a needle
Gimme anything that’s cheap
Gimme anything that’s cheap …

About John MacKenzie

I'll mumble for ya. Poetry, plus most things quantifiable: science, neuroscience, memory, epistemology, baseball. And so on.
