The Religion of Hate

Because I’ve known what it is to hate
I know that to do so is a choice.
I know that hate requires attention
And determination. That it’s work
And, just like honest work, it leaves us
With calluses and scars; that it ain’t
Honest work because it requires
Daily commitment to ignorance.
Hate is a layering-on of lies,
It’s shit we smear in our eyes daily.
Hate requires us to deny facts,
To deny our own humanity—
That even the blood we spill we share,
And we spill it because we share it.

About John MacKenzie

I'll mumble for ya. Poetry, plus most things quantifiable: science, neuroscience, memory, epistemology, baseball. And so on.
